Located in the bustling hub of Kirti Nagar, New Delhi, Furnish and Shade is a 6,500 sq ft retail space defined by clean volumes and thoughtful detailing. The client envisioned a minimalist interior where blinds and fixtures take center stage, while the layout follows Vaastu principles to create a balanced and harmonious environment.
Breaking away from the typical retail formats of Kirti Nagar, the store introduces a striking triple-height volume that links the basement, ground floor, and first floor. Sculptural folded-plate staircases connect these levels, adding movement and visual depth. This seamless vertical flow enhances spatial clarity and offers visitors a cohesive, engaging shopping experience that feels both functional and architecturally uplifting.
From the first floor, circulation takes an interesting turn as the staircase curves around a central lift, creating a new rhythm that guides visitors intuitively through the store. This design choice turns movement into an experience, making every transition feel intentional and engaging.
The front reception becomes a visual anchor, offering a clear view into the basement where jagged, cantilevered staircases and double-height volumes introduce drama and depth. This layered composition builds a strong connection between the basement, ground floor, and first floor, giving visitors an immersive sense of openness. The interplay of volumes and visual links creates continuity throughout the store, making the space feel expansive, connected, and inviting.
The façade of Furnish and Shade blends tradition with modernity. A Rajasthani jali filters the southern light, casting delicate shadow patterns that animate the walls and add cultural richness to the interiors. The rusted copper finish introduces a contemporary, weathered character that enhances visual appeal while improving thermal comfort. This façade is not only aesthetic but also thoughtfully functional, merging heritage with modern architectural needs.
By night, the façade transforms into a glowing artwork as lights wash over the rusted metal petals, adding warmth and presence to the streetscape. This shift creates a strong visual identity, making the store a recognizable landmark. Openings on the first and third floors connect the inside with the street, inviting natural interaction between the two. This layered approach blurs the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, fostering a seamless dialogue with the surrounding environment.
This sense of connectivity continues into the interior, especially in the custom furniture crafted on-site. Each piece reflects careful attention to detail and a seamless blend of form and function. A standout element is the main discussion table, designed with a cantilevered end and a soft, flowing curve that meets the floor. A cylindrical planter integrated into one end brings a touch of nature into the space, merging modern design with organic warmth. The table acts as both a functional centerpiece and a sculptural highlight, echoing the store’s philosophy of balancing aesthetics with utility.
Throughout the store, the spaces between storage units have been used creatively to form niches and seating corners. One notable feature is a calming nook defined by a curved panel wrapped in soothing blue fabric. This quiet retreat aligns with the architectural curves of the site, offering a moment of pause within the energetic layout. The intimate space invites reflection and provides a gentle contrast to the more active zones, creating a balanced and holistic experience for visitors.
Furnish and Shade’s design showcases a refined balance between traditional and contemporary elements, with a clear focus on spatial fluidity, cultural richness, and functional elegance. Every detail—from the expressive façade to the custom-crafted furniture—contributes to an immersive retail environment that blends heritage with modern design. More than a store, it becomes a curated experience that engages the senses, tells a cohesive story, and leaves a memorable impression on every visitor.
